October 25 update

October 25, 2001

Hello All,

I know, I know it has been a while since I added anything new. Well here is some new stuff.

XP Drivers

Sony has finally  put up some WinXP Drivers on their US web site.

Hooray. However, there is one driver missing and it happens to be the one you will probably want the most. The Modem Driver. Well Guess what I have. Yep, you guessed it the modem driver. The Driver comes from the driver recovery CD for the new FXA Vaio Laptops that Sony is now selling. A big THANK YOU needs to go out to Peter for making this driver and all of the other XP drivers available to us.

The usual warnings apply here. Use these drivers at your own risk. I cannot verify that they work but other enterprising souls have already tried them and their results are available on the Yahoo Forum if you are interested.

In fact I highly recommend checking in on the Yahoo Forum and FX210/FX215 forum hosted go Goku at least once a week. Good stuff going on here. Keep up the good work.

Bios Update

There has been a Bios update available from the Sony Europe site for about a month now, but I have been too busy and chicken to try it. This Bios update is supposed to be for the FX201. After looking at the specs for the FX201 it is apparent that it is the exact same machine as the FX210 it just has a slower (700 MHZ AMD Duron) processor. Well, I have had a couple of hours to dink around today and decided to take a chance. Well I have good news. The Bios update fixes the Cardbus (PCMCIA) problem in Win2K. You read that right. Both Cardbus (PCMCIA) slots now work. Very cool.

Here are the links to the Sony Europe site and the Bios update.

Again the usual warning apply. Flashing the Bios is a very low level function. If something goes wrong your machine will be ruined. BE CAREFUL.

FXA Laptops.

Sony is selling three (3) new AMD based laptops. The FXA32, FXA33 and the FXA36. Amazingly enough all of these new machines support PowerNow!. I guess we were all guinea pigs for Sony so that they could get the bugs worked out of their AMD systems.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein Mania

I don't know how many of you are gamers but for those of you who are I strongly recommend checking out the Return to Castle Wolfenstein Test. I have not been hooked on a first person shooter like this since Doom first appeared on the scene. For those of you who don't know the RTCW test is an on-line only multiplayer game that pits two (2) teams of people against each other. For more info check out

My game name is plcdude I usually play a Medic for the Allies or Axis teams.

Well I hope you find some of the above information useful. As always happy computing.
